“Parent leadership is about letting parents know that they’re welcome to come to school, that they deserve to have input,” said Synia Jordan, Parent Leader at Southwest Community Campus. “The little things matter. It could be as simple as waiting with your child at the bus stop, or keeping a playground clean. If you start out small, maybe find an hour a week you can commit, you’ll discover more ways you can make a difference.”
Synia believes each parent has the potential to be a great leader. The trick, she says, is not to sell yourself short. “I always tell my kids, ‘It’s not what other people say you are, it’s what you have the ability to become,’” she said. “Know in your heart and in your mind that you can become whatever you want to be!”
Through Parent Teacher Community Councils, parents have become an active part of the decision-making process in 40 schools.
